Hanoi to hold the Kitchen God festival

On the 23rd of the 12th month of the lunar year, February 3, Hanoians will carry an earthen tripod of 1.2m high, a 3.5m long carp and 12 trays of specialties in a parade from the ancient pottery village of Bat Trang to the Hanoi’s center.

This activity is part of the Tet flower festival to honor craft villages and high-quality agricultural products of Hanoi. According to the organizers, after the parade and the rituals to see the Kitchen God back to the heaven, the 12 trays of specialties, including various traditional cakes like banh chung, banh day, banh day and fruits will be offered at the Ly Thai To monument, the Ngoc Son Temple, and the Thang Long Royal Citadel.

This is the first time Hanoi will organize a large-scale Kitchen God festival. In ancient cultures, the Kitchen God is the closest deity to every person, every family in Vietnam. On the Kitchen’s God Day, or the 23rd of the 12th month of the lunar year, people burn votives and release carps to see the Kitchen’s God back to the heaven.

In addition to the Kitchen’s God festival, many activities such as performance of calligraphic arts, parallel sentences and craft products, the ceremony in honor of the Vietnamese artisans, a cooking contest, etc. will be held at the Tet flower festival, at the Vietnam Culture and Art Exhibition Center, No. 2 Hoa Lu, Hanoi.
