Hung Kings Festival 2013 coming up

Hung Kings Festival activities will be held in Phu Tho from April 13-19 to commemorate the death anniversary of Hung Kings – the founders of the Vietnamese nation.

Delegations from many regions in the country bringing Chung cakes as offerings to Hung Kings during the festival The Phu Tho provincial People’s Committee and Ministry of Information and Communications announced the Hung Kings Festival in Hanoi on April 1.

The festival will begin at 8pm on April 13 (the fourth day of the third lunar month) and close at 10pm on April 19 (the tenth day of the third lunar month) with a fireworks performance. Both events will be broadcast live on Vietnam Television’s News and Current Affairs Channel (VTV1).

The festival will feature offerings from eight provinces representing the country’s three regions, namly Lang Son, Ha Nam and Thanh Hoa (in the north), Ha Tinh, Dak Lak, and Binh Dinh (in the centre), and Dong Nai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau (in the south).

The highlight of the celebrations will be a ceremony to receive UNESCO recognition of the Hung Kings worshipping ritual as UNESCO world intangible cultural heritage.

Other celebrations include a street festival, processions, a banh chung (square rice cake) making contest, cultural camps, a Hat Xoan (Xoan singing) festival, a photography exhibition and a variety of sport games.
